Top 7 Kitchen Rangehood Ideas: Matching Style and Colour to Your Kitchen A rangehood used to be an appliance you designed around and tried to hide. In modern kitchens, a design feature chosen as deliberately as the benchtop or splashback. Getting the style and colour right means the rangehood reads as part of the kitchen's design language, not an add-on bolted above the cooktop. Here are seven ways to think about matching a rangehood to your kitchen, from finish through to profile shape. 1. Matte Black for a Bold, Contemporary Kitchen Matte black has become the default choice for kitchens built around a darker, moodier palette. Black rangehood paired with black tapware, black-framed windows or a dark stone benchtop, a black rangehood reads as an intentional design statement rather than a utility appliance. It's particularly effective as a canopy-style unit above an island, where it becomes a visual anchor rather than something tucked out of sight. 2. Crisp White for Bright, Light-Filled Kitchens The reverse holds for lighter kitchens: a black rangehood can sit jarringly against white cabinetry and pale stone. A white rangehood keeps the sightline clean, blending into light-toned splashbacks and benchtops instead of interrupting them. This works particularly well in Hamptons-style and Scandinavian-influenced kitchens where the goal is a calm, unbroken colour palette. 3. Stainless Steel for a Timeless, Neutral Look For kitchens that mix finishes or aren't locked into a strict black-or-white scheme, stainless steel remains the safest long-term choice as it pairs with almost any cabinetry colour and won't date the way a strong colour trend eventually might. It's a practical pick for renovators who expect to update cabinetry or benchtops again before replacing the rangehood itself. 4. Canopy Style as a Centrepiece Above an Island A canopy rangehood is designed to be seen, typically suspended above an island cooktop as the focal point of the kitchen. Because it's fully exposed rather than built into cabinetry, colour and finish choice matters even more here. This is the style where a bold black rangehood finish tends to have the most visual impact. 5. Built-In for a Streamlined, Minimal Look For kitchens aiming for a flush, minimal aesthetic, a built-in rangehood tucks into overhead cabinetry so only a slim front panel is visible. This style works well when you want extraction power without a strong visual statement. The Range Hoods collection includes built-in options in both 600mm and 900mm widths to match different cabinetry runs. 6. Inclined Profile for a Softer, Modern Edge An inclined rangehood angles forward rather than sitting flat against the wall, giving a slightly softer, more sculptural look than a straight built-in unit while still keeping a relatively compact footprint. It suits kitchens that want a modern edge without the full visual weight of an exposed canopy. 7. Matching Rangehood Width to Cooktop and Cabinetry Style and colour aside, proportion is what actually makes a rangehood look intentional rather than mismatched. A rangehood should generally match or slightly exceed the width of the cooktop beneath it, pairing a 90cm cooktop with a 900mm rangehood, or a 60cm cooktop with a 600mm model, keeps the cooking zone visually balanced and ensures full extraction coverage across every burner. Bringing It Together The right rangehood is about colour, profile and proportion working together with the rest of the kitchen. Whether that's a matte black canopy anchoring a dark island or a discreet white built-in disappearing into overhead cabinetry, browse the full Range Hoods collection to compare finishes and sizes side by side, and check that they're matched to your Cooktop width before finalising your renovation plan.

A range hood is only as effective as its filter. No matter how powerful the suction, a clogged, grease-caked filter forces the motor to work harder, lets more smoke and odour escape into the kitchen, and over time, becomes a fire risk as trapped grease builds up. For households that cook often, especially at high heat, filter maintenance isn't an occasional chore; it's part of keeping the whole extraction system doing its job. This guide walks through why cleaning matters, how often to do it, and the exact steps to get a grease filter properly clean without damaging it. Suitable for most standard metal mesh and baffle-style filters, including those fitted to FOTILE range hoods. Why a Dirty Filter Is a Bigger Problem Than It Looks Grease filters exist to trap airborne oil before it reaches the motor and ductwork. Once a filter is saturated, three things happen at once: extraction weakens noticeably, cooking odours linger longer in the kitchen and surrounding rooms, and the fan motor has to draw air through a partially blocked filter, increasing strain and noise over time. Grease build-up is also flammable, so a heavily clogged filter sitting above a hot cooktop is a genuine safety concern, not just a performance one. How Often Should You Clean It? For households that cook with oil regularly, like stir-frying, deep-frying, or wok cooking, aim to clean the filter every 2–4 weeks. Lighter, occasional cooking can stretch that to once every 6–8 weeks. A simple rule of thumb: if you can see a visible grease film or the filter feels tacky to the touch, it's overdue. Step-by-Step: Cleaning a Range Hood Filter 1. Turn off and remove the filter. Switch off the range hood at the wall and let it cool if it's been in recent use. Most FOTILE filters use a quick-release mechanism (based on your model's manual), but generally a gentle push-and-slide or a simple latch release is all that's needed. Avoid forcing the filter; it should come free without resistance. 2. Pre-soak to loosen grease. Fill a sink or basin with hot water and a degreasing dish soap, or a mix of hot water and baking soda for heavier build-up. Submerge the filter fully and let it soak for 10–15 minutes. This step alone removes most of the surface grease without scrubbing. 3. Scrub gently with a soft brush. Use a soft-bristled brush (an old toothbrush works well for mesh filters) to work through the grooves and mesh layers. Avoid steel wool or abrasive scourers — they can scratch the metal and create rough surfaces that trap grease faster in future. 4. Rinse thoroughly and air dry. Rinse under hot running water until no soap or grease residue remains, then stand the filter upright to air dry completely before refitting. Reinstalling a damp filter can trap moisture against the rangehood body. 5. Dishwasher option, where supported. Many FOTILE range hood filters are dishwasher-safe, since not all filter types (particularly some carbon-lined filters) tolerate dishwasher detergent. Where supported, run the filter on a standard cycle without heated drying, which can warp thinner mesh. A Note on Carbon Filters Carbon filters (used in recirculating/ductless setups) work differently to mesh grease filters as they absorb odour rather than trap grease, and can't be washed and reused. If your rangehood uses a carbon filter, it needs periodic replacement rather than cleaning; most manufacturers recommend replacing carbon filters every 3–6 months depending on use. Signs It's Time to Replace, Not Just Clean A filter that's been cleaned regularly should last for years, but watch for signs it's reached the end of its life: persistent discolouration or warping that doesn't lift with cleaning, mesh that's become brittle or is tearing, or noticeably reduced airflow even immediately after cleaning. At that point, replacing the filter is more effective than continuing to clean one that's no longer sealing properly against the rangehood body. FOTILE stocks genuine grease-capturing filters and carbon filter sets sized to fit its range hood models. Keeping the Whole System Working Together A clean filter only solves part of the equation: if your range hood is undersized for your cooktop, or your cooktop runs hotter than your extraction was designed for, even a spotless filter won't fully clear the air. It's worth checking that your range hood is correctly matched to your cooktop width and burner output, particularly in kitchens built around high-heat wok cooking. FAQs How often should I clean my range hood filter? Every 2–4 weeks for frequent, high-heat cooking; every 6–8 weeks for lighter use. Visible grease or a tacky surface means it's overdue regardless of the calendar. Can I put my range hood filter in the dishwasher? Many metal mesh filters are dishwasher-safe, but check your specific model first — some finishes and carbon-lined filters shouldn't go through a dishwasher cycle. Why does my kitchen still smell like cooking after cleaning the filter? A clean filter improves airflow, but persistent odour after cleaning can point to a carbon filter needing replacement (in recirculating systems) or a rangehood that's undersized for your cooktop's output. Is a greasy range hood filter actually a fire risk? Yes — built-up grease is flammable, and a clogged filter sitting directly above a heat source is a recognised kitchen fire hazard. Regular cleaning is a safety measure as much as a performance one.

A kitchen is the heart of the home, a space where design elegance meets the daily rhythm of family life. But for households that celebrate the art of cooking, particularly Asian cuisine, which relies on high-heat wok stir-frying and rich, aromatic spices, the kitchen demands more than just beautiful cabinetry. It requires appliances engineered for uncompromising performance. If you are planning a kitchen renovation or upgrade, you have likely encountered the undermount rangehood. Known for its sleek, invisible profile, the undermount rangehood is a favourite among modern designers. However, many premium European brands treat these rangehoods as design afterthoughts, leaving them underpowered for rigorous, oil-intensive cooking. We will explore what makes an undermount rangehood the perfect choice for your kitchen, how to choose the right one for high-heat cooking, and why FOTILE has engineered the ultimate solution for discerning Australian homeowners. What is an Undermount Rangehood? An undermount rangehood (also known as an integrated, built-in, or concealed rangehood) is designed to be installed completely flush underneath your overhead kitchen cabinets. Unlike canopy or wall-mounted rangehoods that serve as a visual focal point, an undermount rangehood remains hidden from view. The primary appeal of this design is seamless integration. It allows your custom cabinetry, splashback, and premium countertops to take centre stage, creating clean, uninterrupted sightlines in the kitchen. Why Choose an Undermount Rangehood? Choosing to integrate your rangehood offers several distinct advantages for modern kitchen designs: Seamless Aesthetics: By hiding the extraction unit, you achieve a minimalist, bespoke look that is highly sought after in premium kitchen renovations. Space Optimisation: Because it is built directly into the cabinetry, an undermount rangehood maximises vertical space. You can often utilise the cabinet space above the unit for storing spices or smaller kitchen items. Versatility: Undermount rangehoods blend effortlessly with any design style, from ultra-modern handleless kitchens to classic Hamptons-style homes. However, the concealed nature of undermount rangehoods often leads to a significant compromise in traditional models: suction power. The Challenge: European Rangehoods vs. Asian High-Heat Cooking For decades, the premium appliance market in Australia has been dominated by European brands. While these appliances offer beautiful finishes, they are fundamentally engineered for European cooking styles, simmering, baking, and light pan-frying. When subjected to the intense heat, heavy smoke, and vaporised oil of Asian wok cooking, standard European undermount rangehoods often fall short. This results in: Lingering Odours: Spices and cooking smells permeate the house, settling into fabrics and furniture. Grease Build-Up: Weak suction allows vaporised oil to escape, coating your beautiful new cabinetry and splashback in a sticky layer of grease. Health and Wellness Concerns: Poor ventilation leaves harmful cooking fumes, including carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), circulating in your family's breathing zone. To truly protect your family's well-being and preserve the pristine condition of your kitchen, you need an undermount rangehood purpose-built to handle high-heat, oil-intensive cooking. Key Features to Look for in an Undermount Rangehood When evaluating an undermount rangehood, look past the brand name and focus on the engineering. Here are the critical factors to consider: 1. Suction Power and Airflow Airflow is often measured in cubic meters per hour (m³/h). For high-heat stir-frying, you need robust extraction. However, raw power isn't everything, how the rangehood captures the smoke before it escapes is equally important. Look for intelligent aerodynamic designs that create a wide extraction zone. 2. Depth and Coverage Many undermount rangehoods are too shallow, covering only the back burners of your cooktop. If you are stir-frying on the front wok burner, the smoke easily bypasses the rangehood. Ensure the model you choose offers sufficient depth or advanced capture technology to cover the entire cooking surface. 3. Noise Levels A powerful motor often means a noisy kitchen, making it difficult to converse or entertain while cooking. The best premium rangehoods utilise advanced noise-reduction technology, allowing for peaceful, quiet operation even on the highest settings. 4. Ease of Cleaning High-heat cooking generates grease. If a rangehood is difficult to clean, the grease filters will clog, severely reducing performance over time. Look for easily removable, dishwasher-safe filters and concealed motors that prevent oil from entering the internal mechanics. How FOTILE Reinvents the Undermount Rangehood As a kitchen appliance brand trusted by over 30 million families globally, FOTILE understands the exact demands of high-heat cooking. We bridge the gap between premium, minimalist design and heavy-duty extraction power. Here is why FOTILE’s undermount rangehoods are the preferred choice for homeowners who refuse to compromise: WhisPower Technology FOTILE's proprietary WhisPower system separates smoke from the air with incredible efficiency. By utilising aerodynamic principles, our undermount rangehoods achieve maximum extraction power while operating at exceptionally low noise levels. You get the power required for wok cooking without the roar of an industrial fan. Wide Capture Shield To solve the issue of front-burner smoke escape, FOTILE utilises an innovative Capture Shield design. This creates a broader negative pressure zone, effectively locking down smoke and grease before it has the chance to spread into your living areas. It acts as an invisible barrier, ensuring every wisp of smoke is drawn into the extraction unit. Auto Turbo System When stir-frying, the volume of smoke can increase instantly. FOTILE's Auto Turbo system detects the resistance in the exhaust flue and automatically increases suction power to push smoke out of your home efficiently. It is intelligent air management that adapts to your cooking style in real-time. Family Wellbeing and Easy Maintenance We believe a clean kitchen is the foundation of family health. FOTILE rangehoods feature seamless, easy-to-wipe stainless steel surfaces and uniquely designed grease filters that are completely dishwasher safe. By capturing up to 95% of airborne grease, FOTILE protects your family's lungs and keeps your cabinetry spotless. Sizing and Installation Tips To ensure optimal performance from your built-in rangehood, keep these installation guidelines in mind: Size Matching: Choose a rangehood that is at least as wide as your cooktop. For a standard 90cm cooktop, a 90cm undermount rangehood is essential. Mounting Height: For gas and wok burners, the rangehood should generally be installed between 650mm and 750mm above the cooking surface. Always consult the manufacturer's specific guidelines to ensure safety and maximum capture efficiency. Ducting: To handle high-volume smoke, always vent your rangehood to the outside using rigid or semi-rigid ducting. Avoid flexible foil ducting, as the ridges create air resistance, increase noise, and trap grease. Your kitchen should be a sanctuary, a place where beautiful design and culinary passion coexist in harmony. You do not have to choose between a minimalist, concealed kitchen aesthetic and the power needed to cook the foods your family loves. While European brands offer elegance, they often lack the cultural fluency and engineering required for authentic, high-heat Asian cooking. FOTILE provides the ultimate solution: globally credentialed engineering, whisper-quiet power, and seamless integration. Ready to upgrade your kitchen experience? Frequently Asked Questions Are undermount rangehoods good for wok cooking?  Standard European undermount rangehoods often struggle with wok cooking due to shallow coverage and lower extraction power. However, premium Asian-engineered undermount rangehoods, like those from FOTILE, are specifically designed with advanced capture technology to effortlessly handle the heavy smoke and oil of wok cooking. Do undermount range hoods need to be vented outside?  While some rangehoods can be configured for recirculation (using carbon filters to purify air before releasing it back into the kitchen), venting to the outside is highly recommended. Ducted extraction is the only way to effectively remove heat, moisture, and heavy smoke from high-temperature cooking. How do I clean my undermount rangehood?  Regular maintenance is simple. Wipe down the stainless steel exterior with a soft cloth and a gentle degreaser. For FOTILE rangehoods, simply unclip the grease filters and place them in your dishwasher on a regular cycle to maintain peak airflow performance.
